IMPORTANT CHANGES TO TRS PURCHASE OF SERVICE CREDIT
Senate Bill 1668, recently passed by the Texas Legislature, makes significant changes in the opportunity to purchase unreported service and/or compensation credit (including substitute service). The bill also increases the cost to purchase unreported service and/or compensation credit (including substitute), as well as out-of-state, developmental leave, and withdrawn service credit. TRS is currently updating our printed materials and website calculators to reflect these changes. In the meantime, please review these changes carefully before taking any actions relating to your TRS benefits
. For further details, please refer to the following TRS 2011 Legislative Summary
The calculators on this page may be used to estimate your potential service (not disability) retirement benefits; the estimated cost to purchase unreported/substitute service that was rendered prior to September 1, 2011; or the estimated cost to purchase state sick/personal leave.
Note: These calculators produce estimates that are not binding on TRS. The results are subject to audit, adjustment, and correction.
Retirement Estimate Calculators – There are two service retirement estimate calculators. Review the information on the page, then choose the calculator that corresponds to your membership status. These calculators do not require a User ID or password.
If you have a MyTRS User ID and password, you may log in to use its calculator which automatically imports current data from your TRS membership account such as your years of service credit, highest salaries, etc.
Unreported/Substitute Service and Calculator – Unreported service is service that is eligible to be reported to TRS but that was not reported to TRS at the time the service was rendered. It may also include substitute service and unreported compensation. This calculator does not require a password.
State Sick/Personal Leave and Calculator – If, on your last day of employment before retirement, you have credit for 50 days or more, or 400 hours or more, of accumulated state sick and/or personal leave, you may be eligible to purchase one year of service credit. This calculator does not require a password.
Withholding Calculator – This calculator is for estimating the federal income tax to be withheld from your annuity. You can enter your gross annuity, select your marital status, and enter the number of exemptions and other deductions you’d like used in calculating your withholding. This calculator does not require a User ID or password.
If you have a MyTRS User ID and password, you may log in to use its calculator which automatically imports the current annuity and withholding elections from your TRS account. You can modify your marital status, the number of exemptions, and other deductions to estimate changes in your withholding.
